Advanced Application of Spreadsheet Techniques with Excel

The Objectives of the Course

This workshop focuses on the application of Excel and spreadsheet formulations in business processes across diverse sectors.    

Most professionals are familiar with Excel in terms of knowledge of some functions and facilities in the spreadsheet. What is really needed is to learn how to use Excel as a business application tool. 

The course runs through a variety of applications of Excel giving varied examples. Participants will benefit from a variety of examples and workouts that emphasize the application aspect of Excel without being specific to their sectors. 

This course is different from “Advanced Excel” courses found in the market. It given by a practitioner who uses Excel for decision making in business and shows how to exploit Excel for the analysis and manipulation of data.

Course Contents (over 12 hours)

1) Setup the Excel environment: quick access toolbar, Add-ins, macros, protecting sheets, importing data, developing macros, using templates

2) Use good modeling practices and avoid common errors: best formulation structures, monitoring and auditing formulas, validating entries, exporting tables 

3) Use good modeling procedures: the new “Tables” of Excel, absolute referencing, conditional formatting, custom lists, define names, indexing and matching, validating data, using custom lists.

4) Useful applications of Excel: histograms, Pareto diagrams, sensitivity analysis, goal seeking, scenario management, use random numbers 

5) Applications of Excel’s advanced functions: finding, searching, indexing, looking up, counting, logical operations, error checking and ranking. Checking for errors. 

6) Use forms for better formulations: spinners, scrollers, drop down lists, combos, radio buttons, check boxes, macro buttons and data entry forms for tables. 

7) Apply the Pivot Table for useful cross-tabulation and data analysis: multi-dimensional cross-tabs, slicing data, customizing fields, advanced filters, prepare tables for dashboards. 

8) Apply modern Charting facilities: dynamic charts, floating bars, box plots, tornado charts, errors and drop lines, compound charts, spark lines, funnels, etc.
